OVER-BRUGGEN / BRIDGE THE GAP

The What if Lab (Dutch Design Foundation) and clients of the innovation team of the Program Bureau Bruggen & Kades of the Municipality of Amsterdam (PBK) selected and linked Florian Eckardt and Ivanka Bakker to neighborhood maker Arjen Heus, after which we set to work together to think about the refurbishment of various Amsterdam bridges.

The What if Lab (Dutch Design Foundation) and clients of the innovation team of the Program Bureau Bruggen & Kades of the Municipality of Amsterdam (PBK)
selected and linked Florian Eckardt and Ivanka Bakker to neighborhood maker Arjen Heus, after which we set to work together to think about the refurbishment
of various Amsterdam bridges.

Amsterdam has about 1800 bridges. Many of them were never intended for the heavy traffic that goes over them today. One possibility to spare the bridges is
to close them for car and freight traffic.
But how do you explain that to the residents? And what do you do with that freed up space?
A stimulating challenge for us as a design team. We let the people of Amsterdam participate, so that we could brainstorm with them, not for them.
That process yielded very valuable input, with a preference for social activity and a focus on lighting and greenery. We included Amsterdam's voice
in the proposal and developed a recognizable identity with three concepts that are modular and combinable, and sustainable and low-maintenance.
The three concepts (living room, stories and modular sitting & playing) and the resulting designs can be implemented in the city in a varying composition.
Free spaces of easy chairs, stages and story frames are created on the bridges, and a modular backbone separates bicycle traffic and the residential area.
The whole forms a recognizable identity, appropriate to the character of Amsterdam and created through local participation.


Het What if Lab (Dutch Design Foundation) en opdrachtgevers van het innovatieteam van het Programmabureau Bruggen & Kades van
de gemeente Amsterdam (PBK) selecteerden en koppelden Florian Eckardt en Ivanka Bakker aan buurtmaker Arjen Heus, waarna we
samen aan het werk gingen om na te denken over de herinrichting van een diverse Amsterdamse bruggen.

Amsterdam heeft ongeveer 1800 bruggen. Vele daarvan zijn nooit bedoeld voor het zware verkeer dat er tegenwoordig overheen gaat.
Een mogelijkheid om de bruggen te sparen is het afsluiten voor auto- en vrachtverkeer. Maar hoe leg je dat uit aan de bewoners?
En wat doe je met die vrijgekomen ruimte?
Voor ons als ontwerpteam een prikkelende uitdaging. We lieten de Amsterdammers mee participeren, om niet voor, maar mét hen te brainstormen.
Dat proces leverde zeer waardevolle input op, met een voorkeur voor sociale activiteit en aandacht voor verlichting en groen. 
Wij namen de stem van Amsterdam mee in het voorstel en ontwikkelden een herkenbare identiteit met drie concepten die
modulair en combineerbaar zijn, en duurzaam en onderhoudsarm. De drie concepten (huiskamer, verhalen en modulair zitten & spelen)
en de daaruit vloeiende ontwerpen zijn in een wisselende samenstelling implementeerbaar in de stad. Op de bruggen ontstaan vrije plekken
van luie stoelen, podia en verhaal-kaders, en een modulaire ruggengraat scheidt het fietsverkeer en het verblijfsgebied.
Het geheel vormt een herkenbare identiteit, passend bij het karakter van Amsterdam en door lokale participatie tot stand gekomen.
